These days, I have become rather concerned with C's reading. She tends to give up easily and this is evident especially when the passages are lengthy.
I have since shelved her other nightly activities and exercises like Math, colouring and mazes and just concentrate on reading. She still tries her luck and will be distracted with just about anything and this can drive me up the wall.
I have to literally take deep breaths to calm my nerves and keep my cool or else, C will get it big time. But I also know that screaming at her will only make matters worse because she will just fear reading even more and we will get no where. So, I try. I smile and I sing praises and I give all sorts of encouragement: high-fives, hugs, kisses, you name it, I probably have done it all.
C read this little booklet tonight. It's short and she handled it well.

haha, i know wat u mean by the stress set in. knowing that there wil always be kids who r extremely advanced helps. how abt instead of making her read only, u read for her certain good quality books that she loves? building the love of reading is more important in the long term than reading for sake of reading in the short term :)
morning girl, :)
we have also taken to reading story books but of course, i am doing the reading. when i try to get her to contribute simple words when they appear on the books and she obviously knows them, she will still exclaim, "Mummy, I don't know how to read!"
you are right about cultivating the love for reading. there is an obvious difference from the reading tasks she gets from sch and the story books that we do at home. so i need to be more patient and let her do it at her own time. :)
yup, readers can be quite boring. i also find for bright kids like cheryl, she's so used to being able to pick things up that they want to make sure they r fully capable of doing the work before they wil attempt. so when she's ready, u wil c her zoom thru the books! in the meantime, if she wants, just read for her for enjoyment :)
